Addressing the Mental Health Crisis with Technology and AI
Multiple solutions are necessary to address the mental health crisis in the US, including the role of technology and artificial intelligence. Mental health digital tools have the potential to increase and expand access and options to care and improve population health and health equity. However, regulatory confusion and reimbursement barriers potentially stand in the way of scalable dissemination and implementation of these novel tools. This presentation will describe existing and emerging technologies and the evidence supporting their use, their potential to increase access to care and improve health equity, and what is being done to address the existing barriers within healthcare.
Objectives: At the end of this presentation attendees will be able to:
- Describe the existing and emerging digital tools and how they are different from each other
- Summarize how digital tools can expand access and health equity to marginalized populations
- List the regulatory and reimbursement barriers to full health care implementation for digital tools
- Describe the critical role psychology and psychologists play in the area of emerging technologies

Embracing the Potential of AI in Contemporary Psychology: Navigating Ethical Considerations Amid Technological Disruption
Artificial Intelligence (AI) has made significant progress in recent years, with the development of increasingly sophisticated machine learning techniques, leading to the creation of advanced intelligent systems that can perform complex tasks and make decisions independently. Progress will likely continue at astounding speed in the foreseeable future and will affect almost all aspects of healthcare delivery, including the delivery of psychological services. In this hands-on presentation, opportunities and the dangers of integrating AI into clinical mental health practice will be discussed. Potential benefits and limitations of AI will be reviewed, including improved efficiency and accuracy of diagnosis, treatment planning, and decision-making in clinical settings. Ethical concerns and potential dangers of AI will be reviewed (e.g., risk of perpetuating bias and inequity in healthcare delivery versus maintaining human empathy and judgment in clinical decision-making). This presentation will emphasize the importance of addressing the digital divide and ethical considerations in deploying AI tools for educational and social justice purposes.
*PLEASE NOTE: Two hours of Dr. McCown’s three-hour presentation are Ethics/Law CEs
Objectives: At the end of this presentation, attendees will be able to:
1). Describe Artificial Intelligence (AI)’s key assumptions, components, and technologies.
2). Compare and contrast AI’s applications, opportunities, and challenges in psychotherapy, assessment, education, and scholarship.
3). Discuss ethical, legal, and social justice issues related to the coming AI revolution including problems with Large Language Models (LLMs).
4). List two current popular LLMs and image creation models that have the potential in increase comfort regarding using AI for routine tasks.
