Keynote Address
Our keynote speaker will be Dr. Amy Beck – clinical and pediatric psychologist from Missouri who is presenting on advocacy in psychology in all its many forms – clinical community, state, national, public, and institutional. Come learn why our voice matters!
Dr. Beck is involved with the Missouri Psychological Association as diversity board officer, federal advocacy coordinator, and legislative chair. She is a division advocacy partner with APA and is a recent graduate from the Leadership Institute for Women in Psychology. She has won multiple awards at the national level for her advocacy and service. Dr. Beck is a clinical and pediatric psychologist at the Center for Children’s Healthy Lifestyles & Nutrition at Children’s Mercy in Kansas City. She has worked with the Office of Equity and Diversity and was the health equity advisor and DEI champion with the department of pediatrics. Dr. Beck was promoted to Professor of Pediatrics at the University of Missouri – Kansas City School of Medicine in 2022. She is currently serving as a licensed psychologist contracting with The Black Girl Doctor – an online therapy practice prioritizing black professional women. LPA is honored to have Dr. Beck present on advocacy in psychology!

Keynote Presentation: Advocacy in Psychology – This presentation is an introduction to advocacy as a psychologist and/or a learner and will address multiple levels of advocacy: clinic/institutional, community, state, national, public domain, as well as “everyday advocacy,” with tips for engagement and practical examples. The Scientist-Practitioner-Advocate model will be introduced, as will recommendations for using advocacy for academic promotion. Dr. Amy Beck (2 hours)
Breakout Sessions
- An Update on Medicaid Services, Initiatives, and Best Practices for Children and Youth – Louisiana’s Medicaid program serves some of the most vulnerable children in the state. This presentation will highlight current efforts and challenges in providing needed and effective services for children and youth in Louisiana. Dr. Stephen Phillipi and Kristin Savicki (1.5 hours)
- Health Psychology panel – Health psychologists from UMC will discuss the various ways in which mental health professionals interface with multidisciplinary medical teams in treating a variety of medical conditions, and the ways in which mental health interventions improve medical outcomes – Moderated by Dr. Nathan Brown (1.5 hours)
- LPA Updates from the 2024 Legislative Session & Laws Impacting Psychology – Participants will gain an understanding of recent legislative action and laws pertaining to psychology practice from the 2024 legislative session and implications for how this will impact psychology practice in Louisiana – Drs. Jesse Lambert and Erin Reuther-Tarcza (1.5 hours – ethics or law CE)
- Legal, Ethical, and Scientific Concerns for Psychologists Regarding a Petition for Continuing or Permanent Tutorship in Louisiana – Tutorship (versus guardianship) is a term only used in Louisiana when a person has been appointed by a court and is deemed legally responsible for the care for a minor child when a person age 16-17 is determined to not have the capacity to manage their own affairs. In Louisiana when a person ages 16-17 possesses “less than two-thirds of the intellectual functioning of a person of the same age with average intellectual functioning”, the court may place such person under a continuing tutorship – terminology that merits significant investigation from legal, ethical, and scientific fronts. Participants will learn of the most recent developments regarding the current definition of intellectual disability versus intellectual functioning as well as address intelligence and adaptive behavior and limitations in traditional standard score methods. Drs. George Hebert and Barbara McDermott (1.5 hours ethics or law CE)
- Gender Affirming Psychological Practice: Evidence-Based Practice and a Changing Landscape – This presentation will assist psychologists in understanding biopsychosocial risk and protective factors for the gender-diverse population and familiarize attendees with evidence-based interventions and supports to help support their patients through a changing legal, healthcare, social, and political landscape. Dr. Clifton Mixon (1.5 hours – multiculturalism or diversity CE)
- Malingering in Forensic Evaluations – Learn the main methodological problems which question whether forensic neuropsychological determinations of malingering can be considered valid – Dr. Christoph Leonhardt (1.5 hours)
- Medical Psychology panel – Learn from medical psychologists about the newest developments in psychopharmacology and treatment of mental health disorders – Moderated by Dr. Jesse Lambert (2 hours)
- Legal Status Issues and the Provision of Care. This presentation, being given by Disability Rights of Louisiana, will cover information about what services this agency provides, an overview of their current systemic litigation, a discussion about legal status issues, and how their agency can work together with psychologists to best meet the needs of Louisiana citizens – Melanie Bray, Director of Legal Programs and Advocacy. (2 hours of ethics or law CE)
- Evaluation and Treatment of Sex Offenders and Their Victims – This presentation will provide information as to how both offenders and victims are evaluated and treated – the victim after their experience, and the perpetrator after they are found guilty. Drs. Sue Austin and Yolanda Crump (2 hours)
- When Medication for ADHD May Be Helpful – This presentation will differentiate ADHD from other psychological and neurological diagnoses, the importance of a thorough neuropsychological evaluation for proper determination of interventions and medications, and the assessment of biological determinants prior to prescribing an appropriate medication individualized according to test results. Drs. Darlyne Nemeth and Traci Olivier (1.5 hours)
- First Responders and Need for Training in Autism Spectrum Disorder. This presentation will review a proposed plan that can educate and inform first responders as to how to adequately assess and address individuals with ASD – Drs. Adam Blancher and Michelle Yetman (1.5 hours)
- The I in You: Narcissism – Diagnosis or Human Condition? – This presentation will aim to objectively distinguish “self” from “being”, explore its constrictive and compulsive forms in human experience and behavior, link this understanding to our existence, and discuss ways to move beyond these challenges. Dr. Jeffry Luria (1.5 hours)
- The Mitigating and Aggravating Factors of Mental Illness on Capital Punishment in the United States. Relationship between mental illness, socioeconomic factors and capital punishment and ramifications of capital punishment on offenders and society. Dr. Hannah Walsh (1.5 hours – ethics or law CE)
- The Ongoing Promise of Positive Psychology: Clinical Applications Learned from Twenty-Five Years of Studying Human Goodness – This presentation will take a look at the history and progress of positive psychology through the years, and provide applications for current use in a clinical setting – Dr. Sean Ransom (1.5 hours)
- Order for Protective Custody and Its Relation to the Coroner’ Office in Louisiana. This presentation will review procedures of the apprehension and evaluation of a person who has become a danger to themselves or others and who is unwilling to seek treatment on a voluntary basis. Cindy Steele and Rickie Monie – Psychiatric Services Coordinator and Coordinator Assistant in New Orleans (1.5 hours ethics or law CE)
Science Café – Learn about basic and applied psychological science – cutting-edge research being conducted by medical and academic institutions throughout Louisiana, as well as the broader clinical and theoretical implications of this research. Moderated by Dr. Amanda Raines (1.5 hours)
Louisiana State Board of Examiners of Psychologists – Psychologist Dr. Shawanda Woods-Smith and LSBEP Executive Director, Jaime Monic, will review details of the complaints process and will provide an update of the ways in which psychologist can earn continuing education hours (1 hour)
