LPA is excited to announce that Dr. Douglas Gentile, Distingushed Professor of Psychology and Fellow of the APA, will be presenting for the first half of the day, and Louisiana’s own Dr. Ken Roy, Associate Professor of Psychiatry and Addiction Medicine at Tulane School of Medicine & Director of Addiction Services at LSU Shreveport, will be presenting for the second half of the day. Breakfast, lunch, and all-day coffee service are included with your registration. If you are unable to attend in-person, the workshop will be available in real time through Zoom.

Presentation Information

A deep dive into the impacts of screen time, media violence and gaming.

Dr. Gentile’s LPA presentation will focus on the science behind the effects of screen time on children and adolescents, exposure to media violence, and gaming disorder. 

Objectives: At the end of this presentation, attendees will be able to:

-Evaluate the research on the connection between screen time and attention problems.

-Discuss the effects of media violence and prosocial media on youth.

-Describe the state of the science on Gaming Disorder.

Douglas Gentile, Ph.D.

Dr. Douglas Gentile is an award-winning research scientist, educator, author, and is a Distinguished Professor of Psychology at Iowa State University. His experience includes over 35 years conducting research with children and adults.  He has authored over 150 peer-reviewed scientific journal articles, including studies on the positive and negative effects of mass media on children in several countries. He has also authored several books related to the impact of media violence on children and how to help parents and caregivers make informed media choices for children.

A deep dive into the neurobiological impact of addiction.

Dr. Roy’s LPA presentation will focus the disease model of addiction, neurobiology of addiction, and ethical considerations in the recognition of substance misuse or psychiatric impairment.

Objectives: At the end of this presentation, attendees will be able to:

-Describe addiction as a disorder of the reward, salience, and executive networks that exists prior to recognizable symptoms and that persists after abstinence or the discontinuation of behavior.

-Describe the basic brain structures involved in addiction and how those behave differently in the context of neuroadaptation.

-Describe the ethical considerations related to personal use of addictive substances or untreated mental health conditions in themselves and in their colleagues.

A. Kenison Roy, III, MD

A. Kenison Roy, III, MD (Ken) is recently Associate Professor of Psychiatry and Addiction Medicine at Tulane School of Medicine, Director of the Division of Addiction Medicine within the Department of Psychiatry, and Program Director of the Addiction Medicine Fellowship. He is moving to LSU Shreveport in the Department of Psychiatry as Director of Addiction Services at the rank of Associate Professor. He is a Distinguished Life Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association and a Distinguished Fellow of the American Society of Addiction Medicine.He has long held leadership positions in the American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM) and was most recently a member of the Board of Directors representing Region VII and is currently on the Board of Directors of the American College of Academic Addiction Medicine (ACAAM) and Odyssey House of Louisiana. Dr. Roy is licensed to practice medicine in Louisiana and Mississippi.
